My Brutal Wake-Up Call (The Reality of “FIRED”)

By day, I work as a Human Resources (HR) manager in the petrochemical industry. I have a Master’s degree in Labor Economics, so I know the numbers. But in HR, I also see the harsh human side of corporate life.Recently, my company went through a massive restructuring. My job was to sit across the table from older, hardworking employees and tell them they were being laid off (FIRED). It was heartbreaking. But during these interviews, one 50-year-old man stood out. When I told him the bad news, he didn’t get angry or cry. He just smiled calmly and accepted the severance package. Why? Because he was a famous investor in our company. He had built a massive financial cushion.That day, I learned the most important lesson of my life: Money is a shield. If you do not build your own financial pipeline, you will always be at the mercy of your employer. I decided then and there: I will “FIRE” (Financial Independence, Retire Early) before I get “FIRED.”

The Taste of True Freedom (YOLO!)

A few years ago, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked as an expat in Malaysia. Because of the lockdowns, I worked from home in a beautiful house with a swimming pool. For the first time, I had dinner with my kids every night.I started noticing my neighbors. They were young men in their late 30s, just like me. But they weren’t rushing to the office. They were swimming in the middle of the day, traveling, and living off real estate rent and dividend investments. They weren’t climbing the corporate ladder; they had bought back their time. I realized that my goal wasn’t just to get a promotion or a higher salary. My true goal was Freedom. You Only Live Once (YOLO), and I want to spend my life experiencing new cultures, not stuck in a cubicle.
